THE INFLUENCE OF CHELATION ON RADIOMANGANESE EXCRETION IN MAN AND MOUSE ' By LAURENCE

چکیده
Manganese is capable of forming complex ions with many substances found naturally in the body (1). It seems reasonable to assume, therefore, that manganese injected as MnSO4 (hereafter referred to as "ionic manganese") will be complexed in the body to a varying extent shortly after administration. If the Mn is strongly chelated before it is injected, a state of competition between ligands is set up, and an estimate of the strength of the physiological binding of manganese can be gained from the degree of alteration of the natural excretory pattern of the isotope resulting from the use of the strong chelate. In order to test this assumption, manganese was administered after previous chelation with an excess of EDTA 4 (hereafter referred to as "Mn chelate"), a strong complexing agent which has been shown to have pronounced effects on the excretion of some metals (2). The excretory patterns of "ionic" and "chelated" Mn were then compared. When injected intravenously into experimental animals, manganese is rapidly removed from the circulating blood and distributed to various tissues of the body (3). The organs having the greatest capacity for manganese uptake are the liver, pancreas, and kidneys: and within the liver cell this element is concentrated to a high degree in the mitochondria (4). Excretion is almost entirely fecal, and more than half of this manganese is eliminated in the bile. Increasing the amount of manganese injected increases the rate of excretion (5, 6). An appreciable percentage also appears

متن کاملUrinary excretion of erythropoietin in normal men and women.
With the technical assistance of Brenda Prewitt T HE ROLE OF ERYTHROPOIETIN in the regulation of normal, steadystate, erythropoiesis in man has been disputed.14 The relative imisensitivity of currently employed technics for the detection of this hormone in normal plasma5 and urine” has contributed to this problem. This report presents sults derived from improvements in the polycythemic mouse bi...
متن کاملTryptophan and nicotinic acid studies in man.
Recent studies have shown that tryptophan is effective in preventing or curing nicotinic acid deficiency in the rat (l), chick (2), mouse (3), dog (4), pig (5), and rabbit (6). Increased urinary excretion of nicotinic acid or P;S’-methylnicotinamide (NI-Me) after ingestion of tryptophan has been demonstrated in the rat (7), cotton rat (8), horse (8), pig (5), dog (4), calf (9), and human (10, 1...

1. The urinary excretion of orally administered [(14)C]benzoic acid in man and 20 other species of animal was examined. 2. At a dose of 50mg/kg, benzoic acid was excreted by the rodents (rat, mouse, guinea pig, golden hamster, steppe lemming and gerbil), the rabbit, the cat and the capuchin monkey almost entirely as hippuric acid (95-100% of 24h excretion). 3. In man at a dose of 1mg/kg and the...
متن کاملEffect of famotidine on radiation induced apoptosis in human peripheral blood leukocytes
ABSTRACTBackground: Radioprotective effects of famotidine, an antagonist of H2 receptor clinically used for peptic ulcer treatment, was previously shown on radiation-induced micronuclei and chromosomal aberration in human peripheral blood lymphocytes and mouse bone marrow cells. This study was conducted to investigate radioprotective property of famotidine against radiation induced apoptosis i...
